Kalai received her Occupational Therapy degree from University of Durban - Westville in Durban, South Africa.

She began practicing as an Occupational Therapist in South Africa in 1992. After relocating to Seattle, she worked in various Hospitals and Skilled Nursing Facilities providing Acute/Sub-Acute care and In/Out-Patient Rehabilitation. She has been a Hand Therapist with Pacific Handworks since 2000.
