Gait Analysis: Spot the Problem & Stop The Pain

If you are just starting to train, or getting back into your regular workout routine this fall after a busy summer it is important to enter your activity safely. A gait analysis can help you enter your sport without pain to help assess the way your body moves to reduce the risk of common running injuries such as:

  • Shin Splints
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Pateller tendonitis

During a gait analysis your local physical therapist can observe and carefully assess the way that you move your feet, ankles, knees and hips, specifically looking at pronation. Pronation is the turning-inward movement of your foot as it touches the ground, provides cushioning for the body.

To prevent injury athletes should also strengthen toes and plantar fascia with exercises such as the standing calf stretch, achilles stretch and the towel stretch. For more exercises or tips to effectively execute these stretches, visit your local PT.

Lastly, remember to wear comfortable shoes that fit properly. Visit your local running store that specializes in walking/running shoes to be sure that you get a pair that works the best for you.
