Structural Integration

Structural Integration is a manual therapy technique that focuses on the fascia; the connective tissue the envelopes our muscles, nerves, organs, bones and blood.

The Technique

Structural Integration is a manual therapy technique that focuses on the fascia; the connective tissue the envelopes our muscles, nerves, organs, bones and blood.
Injury or stress to a part of the body triggers a neuromuscular response, usually involving some combination of contraction, retraction, immobility, and often rotation.

These patterns put some muscles under strain and also pull at the fascial fabric, requiring it to shift, thicken, glue itself to surrounding structures, and otherwise compensate for the excess sustained muscular holding. When constriction in our fascial tissue occurs, our “supply lines” can become altered or shut down. This can lead to conditions that may involve some or all of the following: pain, poor circulation, nerve irritation, weakness, fatigue, boney misalignments, and swelling.

When tissues are stressed, they become dense, dehydrated and shortened over time. With deep pressure and stimulation of the myofascial system, structural integration allows the tissue to return to a more supportive, hydrated, soft, pliable state, enabling the body to maintain its alignment, connection, and presence.

A Structural Integration session at SCFSM

In a one-on-one setting with your practitioner, you will experience treatment that involves postural assessment, myofascial testing, manual mobilization of the connective tissue directed at restoring alignment and proper mobility of the fascial tissues. A practitioner may use slow, deep, stretching movements, or constant applied pressure. You may also be asked to move as pressure is applied or to stand and move during a session.
